The Bath band's sophomore was one of 1985's most successful albums and it cemented Tears for Fears as one of the defining acts of the 80s. Bold, emotional and sonically adventurous, it combined pop accessibility with a depth and ambition that has helped it endure for 40 years. This new anniversary edition adds an extra layer of great material. The original tracklist remains untouchable: 'Shout' still thunders with power, 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' shimmers as one of pop's most perfect singles and 'Head Over Heels' is equally as good as the back up single. Lesser-celebrated gems like 'The Working Hour' and 'Listen' show just how ambitious the record truly was. The second LP of bonus material is where the reissue distinguishes itself. Alternative mixes, demos and soulful re-recordings provide new and different exciting sides to the band's creative process. The stripped-back piano version of 'The Working Hour' and the demo of 'Broken' feel particularly intimate, while the early mix of 'Mothers Talk' shows the track in its early stages, long before studio production techniques were applied. All housed in a beautiful package, this anniversary edition is clearly something to celebrate.
