Florida rockers Alter Bridge are now two decades into their career - and they show no signs of flagging. A self-titled album normally appears at a significant point in a band's career, either right at the start where they nail their colours to the mast, or at a later point where they feel like they should be mixing things up a little bit (think Metallica's s/t "Black" album). This being album number eight from Alter Bridge, this would be the perfect opportunity to veer from the expected. But long term fans fear not, there's nothing in the way of a serious reinvention going on here. The blueprints remain firmly in place, if anything, they've honed what made them special in the first place. With muscular riffing, thunderous drums, roaring (and delicate) vocals and squeaky clean production, Alter Bridge has delivered another almighty album. Sometimes, you need certainty. Taking classic rock influences from the likes of Led Zep, a pinch of Iron Maiden and a healthy dose of Metallica, the band has produced an album that should please just about everybody. From the huge balladry of 'Hang By A Thread', the massive riffing of opener 'Silent Divide', and the huge chorus of 'Scales Are Falling', it's clear that Alter Bridge are not messing about. This just might be their best yet.
