As one of the most unique songwriters around at the moment, Japanese-born, US-based Mitski shows little sign of fading anytime soon. Despite avoiding the spotlight remarkably successfully, her music, which incorporates a range of genres still finds its audience. Her gorgeous crooning ballad, 'My Love Mine All Mine' is closing in on two billion streams on Spotify. The electro-stomp of 'Washing Machine Heart' is on a similar path. You can't argue with good songwriting, no matter the genre. Nothing's Going To Happen To Me is the her eighth album, and it's just as perfect as the albums the preceded it and, if anything is not dissimilar to her previous album The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We. This time round however she makes sure to leave her audience in no doubt that she has a strong desire to remain in the shadows, reject fame and essentially hide away. She recently released 'Where's My Phone?' which, musically at least, could have been an early Oasis B-side. Where it differs from the confidence of early Britpop is that it's shot through with uncertainty and neurosis. There might well be hundreds if not thousands of songwriters exporting similar territory, there's nobody doing it quite like Mitski. Her lyrics and music have a way of making it feel remarkably personal, and that's exactly what she does for the entirety of Nothing's Going To Happen To Me. It's a brilliantly personal but relatable genre-hopping album that, will ensure Mitski can't hide away just yet.
